Program updates March 2010

April 9th, 2010. Written by admin

We’ve been working hard to do more work on the ncyc11 program for the week. The massive multicultural festival is taking shape, meaning that New Year’s Eve is going to be a big night, including music, feasting and of course a great view of the Gold Coast fireworks at midnight.

Thankfully, we’ll take it down a notch on New Year’s Day for an acoustic, unplugged, prayerful start to 2011.

As you would know, Irish Youth Worker, Gillian Best and Australian Christian Magician Christopher Wayne will be available for the week of ncyc11 and have plenty of great stories, entertainment and a strong gospel message in store.

We can also add Remember Seven to the ever growing list of artists. Check out their website at http://www.rememberseven.com.au. Hip hop groups Macbeth and Juliettes are also keen to join us and we have some other big additions in store, so stay tuned.

Next up are the Bible study leaders. We’ll have the full list and different Bible study options available soon.

Having just attended the 28th Synod and Signs of Hope gatherings at Alexandra Headlands as well as following the NCYC build up from a distance, I have become interested in assisting in a volunteer capacity. At the age of 74 years there are perhaps some limits to the degree of involvment in the physical activities. I do think, however, that I may after a lifetime activity in the Uniting (including in my younger days, leadaing a Methodist Youth Group) have something to contribute to the study periods and perhaps some consultative role in preparing worship services and liturgies. In view of the declining number of young people actively associated with the UC (there has even been a suggestion I understand that NCYC be cancelled) I am especially conerned to link up with those young people who are having a struggle with orthodox Christianity. As well as providing what support I may do in the general course of NCYC I would suggest that there be an opportunity for “doubting” young people to explore the opportuntiy to retain their faith through what is coming to be know as Progressive Christianity. Would there be an opprtunity, for example for a study group option exploring modern biblical scholarship in the same way that one might explore other faiths?
Apart from present roles of Treasurer, Organist and general dogsbody with the Acacia Ridge UC I am a convenor of the Uniting Church Lay Forum. I have instituted a magazine, Fresh Steps in Faith to provide a voice for the progressive outlook, I hold a current Blue Card for working with childrn.
